Germany is instead divided into 16 states or Bundesländer. Two of the states you see on the map are what might be known as city-states. They are Berlin and Hamburg. North German Plain, the Central Uplands and the Alpine Foreland are the three major geographical regions of Germany. Northeast German Plain Northwest German Plain Western Central Uplands Eastern Central Uplands South German Scarplands Alpine Foreland and Alps North and Baltic Sea North German PlainCity states, old states, new states and free states. The 16 states include three city states ( Stadtstaaten) - Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen - and 13 so-called "area states" ( Flächenländer ). Three states - Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia - also refer to themselves as "free states" ( Freistaaten ), an old German term for "republic".
